First, there is a "free" version (WordPress.com) that you don't have to pay to set up (very useful for beginner bloggers), and there is a "self-hosted" version (WordPress.org), with whom you work. WordPress.com ("free") has many advantages. This is a great platform for studying blogs. It is aimed at budget conscious beginners or newbies to enter the world of blogging. The drawback is that this type of blog cannot be monetized. With the strict blogging police, WordPress has the option to close your blog at any time. You lose control of your domain name because WordPress is always a part of it. There are also restrictions on what you can put in the sidebar, as only certain HTML scripts are accepted. Registration forms, affiliate links or similar functions are not possible. Other social media providers like Feedburner have recognized this and offer alternative settings.
After using the "free" version for a while and getting used to how WordPress works, you can move on to the "self-hosted" version. If you're not tech savvy (understand HTML and PHP basics), or can't wait to find out how, it's best to have someone create this type of blog for you. This has many advantages. You can use your own domain name to turn your blog into a "blog site" by displaying the page as a website, but with more search engine power. There are several hosts that are compatible with WordPress and my suggestion is to use a host that offers a one-click system through "Fantastico". This will save you a lot of heartache and anxiety as a lot of the hard work is done automatically for you.
You can manage your blog via an FTP system (I use FileZilla) to upload themes, plugins and photos. There are many additional uses to include on your blog that you can get from WordPress for free. Sidebars can accept most programming languages so they can be monetized easily. You can add social network badges, links to cards, registration forms, RSS feeds to Twitter and other blogs, affiliate links, advertisements and much more.
